Dr. Marcus Giese is a Geo-ecologist. He studied Geography and Biology at the Technical University Aachen, Germany. For his PhD project about “matter fluxes in grasslands as influenced by grazing” he moved to Kiel University, Germany and conducted field research in China, Inner Mongolia in cooperation with the China Agriculture University (CAU) and the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IBCAS). His scientific focus lies in the ecology of grassland based agro-ecosystems. Several projects related to ecosystem restoration and sustainable land-use lead him to sites in the nexus of water-use, food production and nature conservation. At the University of Hohenheim, Germany he is currently coordinating a graduate school for PhD projects related to water and agriculture. In his hub management position at the Institute of Agricultural Sciences in the Tropics he promotes activities for research and education in the Tropics.

Providing food and energy for a growing world population while conserving natural resources and essential ecosystem functions is one of our major global challenges. Several pathways for system’s transformation towards the sustainable development goals (SDGs) are competing, thereby creating synergies and trade-offs. Agriculture as a scientific discipline is positioned at this nexus of conflicting interests. The University of Hohenheim has a long-standing history about research and education for Agriculture and the Institute of Agricultural Sciences in the Tropics (Hans-Ruthenberg-Institute) provides a comprehensive capacity with 10 specialised working groups and more than 100 scientists. During the last decade scientists have been active in more than 200 research and educational projects across 50 countries covering the entire spectrum of tropical and subtropical agricultural systems. All essential scientific disciplines of tropical agriculture, i.e., crop and animal sciences, agroecology, agricultural engineering as well as agricultural economics and social sciences, are united in one institute. The institute is well positioned to make a substantial contribution to tackle global scientific, environmental, economic and social challenges in order to ensure food security and develop sustainable agricultural systems. The talk will introduce selected research activities with a focus on sustainable land-use in agro-ecosystems of the Tropics.
