Dr. Sekar Raju is currently working as an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU, a Sino-UK international University) in Suzhou, China. He is also the Director for the undergraduate programme in Biological Sciences at XJTLU. Dr. Raju graduated from University of Madras and did postdoctoral research at the University Duisburg-Essen (Germany), Max-Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology (Germany), Florida International University (USA) and The University of Sheffield (UK) in various Environmental Microbiology and Microbial Ecology projects. He has published several papers in top ranking microbiology journals such as Applied and Environmental Microbiology and many of his papers are well cited (with total citations of over 1500).
He received the German Academic Exchange service (DAAD) fellowship and Marie Curie Senior Fellowship for his postdoctoral research. He is a University Recognized Teacher and PhD supervisor at the University of Liverpool. He is a member of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and Royal Society of Biology (RSB, UK) and fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA), UK.

He will give a brief description of his past research projects include ‘Development of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) protocol for quantification of Gram-positive Actinobacteria’, ‘Molecular analysis of microbial communities associated with black band disease of corals’ and ‘Microbiology of Urban Water Systems’. And more detail introduction on Microbial source tracking (MST) of fecal pollution in watersheds, Detection of antibiotic resistant bacteria and resistance genes (ARGs) in aquatic environments, Impact of urbanization on microbial diversity-ecosystem function and Microbial biofilms.
